Screen Porches Built for Canton Homes
Screen America builds custom screen porches in Canton and across Cherokee County. We have been doing this since 1997. Every porch is framed and screened to the house it attaches to. There are no kit sizes and no standard panels, because Canton housing stock does not come in standard sizes — a 1990s deck off a split-level in the historic district and a covered patio on a new build out toward Hickory Flat are two different jobs.
Why a Screen Porch Makes Sense in Cherokee County
The case for screening in an outdoor space is stronger here than it is in most of the country, for reasons anyone who has spent a summer in Canton already knows:
- The mosquitoes near the Etowah. Canton sits on the Etowah River, and low-lying property near the river and its creeks carries a mosquito load that makes an open deck unusable from dusk onward for a good part of the year. Screen is the only thing that reliably fixes that.
- Spring pollen. North Georgia's pine and oak pollen coats every open horizontal surface for several weeks each spring. A screened porch keeps furniture, cushions and grills clean through the worst of it.
- A long shoulder season worth using. Cherokee County gets warm, pleasant stretches well into October and again from March. A screen porch is what turns those months into usable living space instead of a deck you look at through a window.
- Shade without losing the view. Canton lots tend to back onto trees. Screening keeps the outlook and cuts the glare and the insects at the same time.
Building Onto What You Already Have
Most of the work we do in Canton is not a porch from scratch. It is an existing deck, patio or covered porch closed in properly — which is usually the better value, because the foundation and the structure you have already paid for are doing most of the work.
What that involves depends on what is there. An existing covered porch may need little more than framing and screening between the posts. An open deck needs a roof, and that means checking whether the existing footings and joists will carry it before anything else is decided. We look at that on the first visit and tell you what we find, including when the honest answer is that the deck needs work first.
Choosing the Right Screen
Screen is not one product, and the choice matters more than most homeowners expect. It is the part of the porch you touch, look through and eventually replace:
- Fiberglass mesh — the standard choice. Flexible, forgiving, and it will not crease permanently if something leans into it.
- Aluminum mesh — more rigid and holds its shape tightly across wide spans. Better on large openings where fiberglass can look slack.
- Pet-resistant mesh — heavy vinyl-coated polyester, several times the tear strength of standard screen. Worth it if a dog will be pushing against the lower panels.
- Solar screen — a denser weave that blocks a significant share of the heat and glare. Sensible on a west-facing porch that currently bakes in the afternoon.
- Fine no-see-um mesh — a tighter weave that stops the gnats and midges standard screen lets through. Worth considering on the shaded, damp lots near the water.
